Why the days you don’t feel like working out are the days you should
Chris Hemsworth’s new app Centr is live, bringing with it a charged-up roster of fitness, nutrition and wellness experts who are basically the Avengers of health.
One of those experts is mixed martial arts coach Jorge Blanco, sparring partner and coach to UFC legend Georges St-Pierre, whose celebrity clients include Elsa Pataky, Drake and Meghan Markle.
Blanco, aka “The Spaniard”, shares his health philosophy with Coach’s 5 Fitness Questions.
1. We’re always being promised “the secret” to getting and staying healthy. What’s yours?
Consistency and holding yourself accountable.
Every day a little bit, having in mind that the days you don’t want it are the days that count the most.
If you are able to develop good habits you’ve already won half the battle.
For some people this process is very hard, and they need constant stimulation and help. This is part of the reason why I find our programs in Centr so helpful. You literally have everything, so no excuses can be made!
2. What’s something you know now about health that you wish you could go back in time and tell yourself five or 10 years ago?
In training as well as nutrition I’d tell myself to listen to my body more.
Going back in time I was a pretty hardcore athlete and pushed pretty much through everything. Now, obviously I have learned from my previous experiences and realised that I have listen to my body more.
Pay more attention to recovery, and be more careful with nutrition — especially with sugar intake.
3. What’s your nutrition philosophy?
I love food. One of my favorite things on earth.
I am not that strict on it, I just try to use common sense. Tons of greens and fish, and avoid sugar as much as possible. A great green salad and a salmon fillet would make me happy any time any day of the week.
I am always trying new things and I can’t wait to try all the nutritious recipes our chefs and food team at Centr have put together for us.
Now, when you can have a treat meal (on Centr we call them treat meals, not cheat meals) I love a good margherita pizza — some tacos, a solid burger. My list is pretty extensive on this department!
4. What’s one area of your own health, fitness or wellbeing you’re working to improve?
That’d be flexibility.
I have set a goal to work with Tahl [Rinksy, Centr yoga instructor] twice a week for a month straight. I can’t wait to touch my toes and not feel like I’m gonna break in half!
5. What’s one thing you’d tell a friend to do if they asked your advice on something they can do to improve their health, starting today?
What I told my family and close friends: join us at Centr. Great way to get inspired and have access to some of the greatest minds in health and wellbeing.
