Type 2 diabetes: Six foods swaps to make on Christmas Day to control blood sugar
Type 2 diabetes is usually caused by poor diet and exercise. It causes the level of sugar in the blood to become too high. Left untreated, eye problems, heart attack, stroke and nerve damage can occur. But one of the best ways to control blood sugar levels, or prevent it developing in the first place, is to eat a healthy balanced diet.
With Christmas just days away, and preparations well underway, it’s important to make sure you don’t get carried away with the food and drink on offer.
There are six foods you should be wary of when it comes to your Christmas Day meal – but there are some simple food swaps you can make, as suggested by Diabetes UK.
The diabetes charity recommends swapping 100g butter-basted turkey with skin on (146 Kcal; 5g fat) for 100g skinless turkey (104Kcal; 2g fat).
This will save 42 Kcal; 3g of fat.
Swap one slice of rich fruit cake with marzipan and icing (275 Kcal; 5.5g fat) for one slice of rich fruit cake, no icing or marzipan (169 Kcal; 3g fat).
This will save 106 Kcal; 2g fat.
Swap one mince pie (235 Kcal; 11g fat) for one mini mince pie, no lid (107 cals, 4g fat).
This will save 128 Kcal; 7g fat.
Swap 100g susagemeat stuffing (252 Kcal; 16g fat) for 100g cranberry, orange and roast chestnut stuffing (162 Kcal; 1g fat).
This will save 90 Kcal; 15g fat.
Swap two tablespoons of double cream (133 Kcal; 14g fat) for two tablespoons of 0 per cent Greek yoghurt (16Kcal; 0g fat)
This will save 117 calories; 14g fat.
