World Surf League announces WSL Studios
The professional surfing circuit announced the launch of the World Surf League (WSL) Studios.
The organization led by Sophie Goldschmidt unveiled a content creation division that will be in charge of producing stories around surfing and surfers.
WSL Studios will create documentaries, docu-series, and daily short videos and articles that will be distributed across multiple platforms.
The project aims to connect with established and up-and-coming filmmakers, award-winning and innovative new producers, as well as experienced production companies.
The goal is to share content that matter to surfing fans all over the world.
“We will focus on storytelling that highlights the athleticism of the world’s best surfers, but also on everyday people and cultures, and the richness of narratives and emotions that the sport invokes,” notes Erik Logan, president of WSL Studios.
Pro surfing’s new content-driven venture is ambitious and bold. WSL Studios partnered with the producers that created Netflix’s “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” to produce a series of high-class documentaries.
Content that Matters
“The Kelly Slater Documentary” will be one of the first grand productions.
According to WSL, the 11-time world champion granted WSL Studios access to his personal life and 2019 competitive campaign.
Slater will reveal the stories behind his 30-year career, including the more or less secret details about the Olympic Games and his retirement.
The WSL Podcast Network will be a series of weekly shows that plan to debate the latest news, produce insightful interviews with the relevant personalities, and share environment updates.
“Deep Blue: The Mark Visser Project” will be a feature-length movie about the search for the biggest unridden wave on the planet.
The man who surfed Jaws at night believes to have found the largest surfing wave measuring over 100 feet.
“Transformed” will be a new series hosted by Shaun Thompson focused on answering an old question: “How has Surfing changed lives and cultures?”
The “Surf Ranch Sessions” will showcase the world’s best pro surfers sharing waves with individuals who are at the top of their professions.
“Brilliant Corners” (with Sam Bleakly), “All In” and “Sound Waves” will also hit the online platforms in the upcoming weeks and months.
