UFC 237: Jessica Andrade claims strawweight title with brutal slam knockout of Rose Namajunas

Jessica Andrade lived up to her moniker ‘Bate Estaca’ (Portuguese for ‘pile driver’) by slamming Rose Namajunas unconscious to claim the strawweight title on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 237.

Andrade’s win broke a run of four straight losses for Brazilian’s on the main card, but she struggled to make it into the second round after she found herself on the end of striking master class from ‘Thug Rose’ over the opening five minutes.

The defending champion hit the Brazilian with her jab and straight liberally in the first, negotiating her way out of the firing line with intricate footwork.

At one stage in the first round, Namajunas used a kimura trap to defend a takedown. When she attempted to do the same thing in the second, Andrade hoisted her into the air and slammed her to the canvas to claim the title in devastating fashion.

‘It’s just a huge pressure off my shoulders,’ said Namajunas when discussing her title loss in the immediate aftermath of the bout.

Boos rang out around the Jeunesse Arena as Jared Cannonier was declared the victor of his middleweight clash against Anderson Silva, after the former champion suffered a knee injury that stopped the fight with 13 seconds left in the first round.

Cannonier targeted Silva’s knee from the get-go and when he clipped a final time, Silva immediately folded to the canvas in pain. The American chased up his attack, but didn’t land any punches before referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the action.

‘If they don’t respect me, then I don’t respect them,’ Cannonier told Jon Anik in his post-fight interview as the crowd continued to voice their disdain.

Alexander Volkanovski likely declared himself as the featherweight division’s number one contender with a one-sided decision win over legendary champion Jose Aldo.

The victory marked Volkanovski’s seventh in as many trips to the Octagon, and his seventeenth in a row under all promotional banners.

The Kiwi had a much more consistent output over the three rounds, scoring well with a lead leg kick over the first two rounds. Although Aldo exploded into action on a number of occasions, he failed to put a memorable exclamation point on any of his attacks.

Argentina’s Laureano Staropoli blasted his way to the biggest win of his career, targeting former title challenger Thiago Alves’ body en route to a decision win.

Veteran Alves burst into action in the dying embers of the clash, scoring big with a body shot of his own.

He threw powerful hooks in an effort to claim a Hail Mary knockout, but Staropoli’s early dominance was too much to overcome, and earned him the win on all three judges’ scorecards.

Irene Aldana didn’t let Bethe Correia’s five-pound weight miss get in the way of her scoring a third round armbar finish in their bantamweight clash.

Aldana shot straight punches at the Brazilian from the outside as Correia marched forward, taking punishment as she looked to land her powerful right hand.

In the final minutes of the fight, Correia shot an unsuccessful takedown, opening the gap for Aldana to pull off a deft submission entry to force the tap.
