Ortiz Submits Del Rio

Making his Combate Americas debut at the promotion’s pay-per-view event at the Payne Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, MMA legend Tito Ortiz submitted Alberto Del Rio (aka Alberto El Patron; real name Alberto Rodriguez). Del Rio, a former professional wrestling world champion of WWE, Impact Wrestling and CMLL, was competing in his first MMA fight in nearly 10 years.

Ortiz took Del Rio to the ground almost immediately and nearly got in a guillotine choke. Del Rio managed to get out, but Ortiz continued his pressure. Del Rio tried his own takedown, but Ortiz sprawled and punished Del Rio’s body.

Soon enough, Ortiz got to Del Rio’s back and secured a rear-naked choke, which forced Del Rio to tap out at 3:10 of the first round.

Other noted action on the Combate Americas card included Melissa Martinez edging out Desiree Yanez on a split decision to become the inaugural Combate Americas women’s strawweight champion — the first female champion in promotion history — and Dulce Garcia, known in the professional wrestling world as “Sexy Star”, submitting Anali Lopez Hernandez.
